After years of combining trips to Perth with Melb or Sydney via Singapore my only interest now is the direct London to Perth flight.
Being sold as 16hrs 45mins and far superior to stopovers when I did it in Dec 2018
Will be doing it again around April next year

Could you imagine flying to Oz with Ryanair, or similar.

Would be hell

Lol! You've definitely trumped me ;)
The other memory of that trip was that as a smoker back then I was at the back of the plane and service always went front to back so that by the time they reached me all that was left was Indonesian Spiced Chicken. I had it 5 times

Onsideman, I also flew Garuda in 1981, but to Melbourne. I remember it landing at Jeddah to pick up a load of pilgrims, which certainly affected the cleanliness of the plane.
Also landed in Jakarta and Bali and had to stand outside in the heat.
I think the total was 42 hours.

The first time I flew Emirates I also got upgraded for one leg. At Gatwick, a ground staff lady spotted me in the queue and asked if I wanted a seat with legroom.. She took my passport for a few minutes. So when I checked in I had an exit seat.
At Dubai I was upgraded at the gate to business. At first I was irritated that they changed my seat. Then it sunk in and I realised that I would get some sleep and not have to queue at Bangkok immigration.

Fraser

There weren't able to get us on any other flights as they were all full is my understanding.

Apparently, there was a fuel shortage in NZ so we were going to be going to Brisbane on the way Hong Kong to refuel, but as we only had a 2 hour stopover there we would never make the connecting flight and there weren't any others with 5 spare seats so Emirates it was.

Luckily Emirates weren't affected by the fuel shortage somehow.

Always fly first class or your children will is sage advice

BA have the highest cancellation rate of the big airlines. By law they are supposed to put you on any other carrier that day if possible. I argued this with their customer services and not only got a rebooked flight next day but a refund. Plus the £55 quid taxi…cough cough …as the Piccadilly line wasn’t running..Lucky I wfh so I didn’t loose a days wonga

Fleeced the cunts.

How do you upgrade and fly on Emirates when you've booked with others?

Re: Cheap flights to Australia
The way to do it is to pay for Economy on Cathay Pacific and Lufthansa and get the whole family upgraded to Business Class on Emirates from Auckland to Birmingham like we did before Christmas.

That was pretty cheap.

Would have cost us $36,000 if we'd paid for it ourselves.

My first flight to Oz back in the early 80s was with Garuda...

Stopped in Paris, Frankfurt and Rome, somewhere in the Middle East then Denpasar and Jakarta before finally landing in Perth some 30 hours later

Gruesome

If you come to Australia, you'll need to have a suitable haircut. Preferably a mullet. Ideally it should be DIY or look like the local council have done it.
See any AFL game for examples.

Flew back into City last week from Malaga on BA, flight attendant said the booze was free even in economy as there isn't a lounge at City, wasn't aware of that.

BA are indeed shit. The worst out of the "big" airlines.

Working in Bxl and Paris was great as I could use Eurostar and Thalys. Can’t beat a train .

Longest flight I had was back from Frisco. Was 12 hours in Business Class or whatever Virgin called it. That was long enough in some luxury. No way I’d do 24 hours in coach and as not willing waste 3 grand OZ can fuck itself

Re: Cheap flights to Australia
Taken countless flights. Crazy when you think I spent 3 years in Sthlm, 1,5 in Prague and 1 in Düsseldorf flying every Monday back on Friday. Gold BA membership was great though . Got upgraded loads of time to sthlm

Flying is shit now . BA especially. I have to fly to Lux occasionally and it’s always fucking delayed . You have to fly like a million times to get a lounge pass.
